New animal free testing system for toxicity of inhaled substances

NAVETTA determines biological responses to nano aerosols in a new way. This animal free testing system was developed by VITO and the University of Salzburg to determine the toxicity of inhaled substances on human lungs. It is a flatbed aerosol exposure chamber for in vitro testing of inhalation toxicity. In classical inhalation tests, investigators put test animals in narrow tubes, in which they have to inhale different substances, often resulting in the death of these animals. With the new prototype air-liquid interface (ALI) exposure system NAVETTA responses to nano aerosols can be determined without using test animals.
