System to match electricity grids with electrical demand

GridMatcher® helps system operators to protect their electricity network against constraints violating demand response actions without requiring complex interactions with other stakeholders like retailers or aggregators. It transparently allows demand response activations when these are safe, but intervenes when grid constraints are at risk.

Increasingly more renewable energy sources are being deployed, and at the same time the number of classical power plants is decreasing. As a result of this, we will see a strong increase in flexible load activations of Low Voltage and Medium Voltage connected resources. When these demand response activations occur in an uncoordinated manner, this may cause peak power flows that endanger the electricity grid, e.g. congestions and voltage problems. In a constraint grid it is impossible to transfer electricity without provoking system instability or causing damage. Therefore, system operators need the possibility to intervene in demand response signals to prevent emergency situations and ensure security of supply and quality of service.

Traditional solutions are to limit or forbid demand response activations in certain areas when the grid is in a certain state (e.g. traffic light systems). One can also set up a complex coordination between all stakeholders (flex owners, aggregators, system operators) to agree on what demand response activations are allowed where and by whom taking into account local grid conditions (e.g. Universal Smart Energy Framework). 

A need emerged for a simple solution that does'nt require complex interactions and information exchanges among multiple stakeholders (like system operators and aggregators) but that only intervenes when needed. On top of that, it should maximally allow the amount of flex activations.
