Accurate identification of mutation markers is crucial in cancer treatment response optimization. Reliable diagnostic tests should be flexible towards constraints due to variation in tumor versus non-tumor cells in clinical samples and the heterozygous or homozygous nature of the mutations. This is of particular importance in view of the fact that a relevant set of biomarkers may change over time.

Microarray hybridization is a well known, mature, affordable, widely used and very flexible technology for the detection of DNA mutations.  A remaining challenge with hybridization techniques, however, is obtaining a clear quantitative interpretation of microarray data.
